Best Horror movies on Netflix
The 1990s and 2000s weren’t the best of years for Horror movies. While it’s tough to understand why directors didn’t explore this niche, the lack of films was compensated in the 2010s. Here we bring forward the collection of the best horror movies on Netflix:
1] The Conjuring (2013)
Everybody knows about Conjuring. You have probably already watched it. But no best horror movies list is complete without this franchise. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga make the entire experience so real. The interesting part is, this movie is actually claimed to be based on real events. This movie also made way for Annabelle movies. The Annabelle doll, the Warren family, the Perron family, all exist. That is what makes it so scary!
2] The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
A gruesome murder that looks like a mysterious death, questions without answers, and the quest for the truth. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the best horror movies on Netflix because it is not about paranormal or supernatural elements. It is about the evil within us humans. The movie will remind you of all the gruesome murders you have read or heard about. It is tough to watch, be warned.
3] Mercy Black (2014)
Author Owen Egerton is relatively new to the world of Film Direction but he knows his way around Horror. Mercy Black, available on Netflix, is about an evil spirit the protagonist conjures. It is a movie about the repercussions of stupid mistakes. If you have an Ouija board of sorts, this movie will make you very careful about using it. Because sometimes, it is more than our own lives at stake.
4] Before I Wake (2016)
Talking about new filmmakers, Mike Flanagan has been on the block for less than two decades. He is already one of the best directors in the Horror genre. Before I Wake is not just another horror movie. It gives us meaningful insight into a child’s psyche. That does not diminish the scary factor of the movie. In fact, it is one of the few horror movies that do not depend on jump scares at all. It is all real fright. It is as fantastic as it is horrifying. It is my personal favorite in the Fantasy Horror genre.
5] Death Note (2017)
Directed by Adam Wingard, this American neo-noir was at the center of every Movie forum online the very day it was released on Netflix. This supernatural horror movie is based on the Tsugumi Ohba’s manga that originally has 12 volumes. The movie is about a notebook that has the power to kill. All anybody who finds it needs to do is write the name of the target and the chosen manner of death. Arguably the concept is similar to that of Final Destination. The sheer lack of control over one’s own fate is horrifying and exactly what keeps viewers hooked on to the movie.
6] The Ring (2002)
Yet another adaptation from Japanese films, The Ring managed to scare even those who find horror movies funny. The original movie itself was based on Koji Suzuki’s novel, published 11 years before the first Hollywood adaptation. Naomi Watts and David Dorfman’s realistic performances made the bizarre story convincing and Daveigh Chase made one scary ghost. Gore Verbinski’s venture into the Horror genre had raised skepticism among fans. But the movie turned out to be successful enough for two more sequels, The Ring II (2005), and Rings (2017).
7] Sinister (2012)
Talking about The Ring, Sinister is a horror movie that was rumored to be based on real events. But actually, it was inspired by The Ring. Co-writer C. Robert Cargill had nightmares after watching The Ring. Sinister is the child of these nightmares. The only common link between The Ring and Sinister is video tapes. In Sinister, we see gruesome murders on tape. And Bughuul, the demon behind the murders, was also rumored to be a real demon. But there is nothing to worry about. None of that is true. Watch it for a scary ride but no evil will be chasing you after.
8] Oculus (2013)
Another Mike Flanagan horror, Oculus appears to be a regular horror movie with a haunting mirror. However, the plot offers more than what meets the eye. The constant debate between sinister energy and mental illness makes the movie open to interpretation. It is one of Flanagan’s earlier movies and therefore had the usual dependency on jump scares. If you want to feel sheer fear and hopelessness, watch this movie. It is one of the scariest new movies on Netflix.
9] Would You Rather (2012)
Director David Guy Levy has worked across genres for over a decade. Would You Rather is a horror movie that leaves no stone unturned to terrorize the mind of anybody watching. This movie is based on a dangerous game that turns fatal for many. It is about making choices when you don’t know better. Even if most of us would never be in a situation similar to that of the characters in the movie, the helplessness and futility make it a must-watch on Netflix.
10] As Above, So Below (2014)
John Erick Dowdle is known for his mysteries. As Above, So Below is one of his best. Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Francois Civil, Edwin Hodge, Marion Lambert, and others have given amazing performances to pull viewers into their world of horror. Shot in the actual catacombs in Paris, the movie will make you feel claustrophobic if you try empathizing with the characters. Ironically, Ben Feldman is claustrophobic in real life and had a tough time shooting. When you watch the movie, you will know it was worth it. Did we miss your favorite? Which movie did you like from this list? Please let us know in the comments.
